The ‘Chinese New Year Dinner Party’ and Vietnamese ‘Tet’ celebrations were held at Stamford International University’s Rama 9 campus in the canteen and walkway and were a huge success. Over 200 people attended from 10 faculties, over half of whom were Chinese and Vietnamese students as well as international students, volunteer operator students, and visitors from other universities.

The three-hour Chinese feast had numerous tasty dishes on offer including Sichuan pork, steamed fish with soy sauce and Hong Kong style fried noodles. A particular favourite were the delicious hand-made Chinese dumplings. The Vietnamese ‘Tet’ celebrations likewise had numerous tasty traditional Vietnamese foods lining the walkway.

It wasn’t all about the food, however, as the events were enlivened by over 15 performances from the Stamford Music Club as well as students and even faculty members such as Ajarns Gloria and Serena joining in. The talented performances included dancing, singers (solo, group and chorus), and instrumental music such as guitar playing. There was also a display of traditional Chinese calligraphy, Vietnamese handicrafts and fireworks for Tet.

Adding to the fun were some interactive games that involved the audience such as: ‘You perform, I guess’ and ‘New Year Cupid’ and a traditional Vietnamese icon for photo opportunities. Also featured were lucky draws with a chance to win some of the always popular ‘red envelopes’.

Unlike other universities in Thailand who have two terms a year and are currently on a break, we follow a three-term structure, so Asia’s Lunar New Year falls mid-term. This is why our students were able to enjoy these events with their classmates. The celebrations were a huge success with students and faculty enjoying the food, the performers and the general fun atmosphere. If you missed the events, there is always next year. Happy year of the Rat to you all!

Earlier January saw celebrations for the Lunar New Year, with special events for both Chinese and Vietnamese students hosted by the Chinese Cultural Club and Vietnamese Cultural Club.
